The game was created by File:Mojang-icon (2011).png Markus "Notch" Persson in the Java programming language . After several early private testing versions, the game was first published in May 2009 before being fully released in November 2011, when File:Mojang-icon.png Jens "Jeb" Bergensten took over development. The game is one of the best-selling games of all time, having sold over 238 million copies and with over 140 million monthly active players.
